Product Description Sunpentown Evaporative Air Cooler with Ionizer. Conveniently rolls from room to room to cool and purify the air! The Air Cooler does exactly what the name implies, though it's not an air conditioner. Here's how it works: The Evaporative Air Cooler sucks air through a wick saturated with water. As the air flows through the wick, some of the water evaporates into the air, consuming the heat that's in the air. Cooled down, that air is then blown out the front of the unit to offer you relief in warm, stuffy, uncomfortable spaces. But it doesn't stop there. It also gives you the air cleaning benefits of an ionic air purifier and humidifier to make your environment as comfortable and clean as you like it. Note: Works well in dry climates; not very effective in areas with high humidity as the unit utilizes water to cool. Clean and cool the air: Remote control; 10L water tank capacity; Nylon and photocatalytic filter; Three air speeds: H / M / L; Sleep mode; Timer: from 1/2-hour to 7 1/2-hour setting; Input voltage: 120V / 60Hz; Power consumption: 60W; Air flow: 23 ft per second. 16 x 25 x 12". 17 lbs.; Order yours today and beat the heat! Works for me. June 19, 2010 Ryan Herzer (Castro Valley, CA) 19 out of 19 found this review helpful
I live in California in the Bay Area. Not much humidity and the weather is typically pretty mild but it does get pretty hot in the summer (90+ degrees). I received the unit on a particularly hot day recently and I ran out and grabbed a bag of ice because i wanted to test this things cooling capability. I set it up next to my computer desk and turned on the cool air function. I was sitting about 5 feet from it and in 5 minutes my arm was freezing cold. I was perfectly comfortable the whole day but if i moved from the fan at all the heat was unbearable. This thing does not cool a room but it will cool the area directly in front of it. Once it cooled down a bit I emptied the water (which was made very easy due to the lightness of the unit) into my bathroom sink and used it that night as a normal fan. Its pretty quiet and the fan is powerful. Ive heard these swamp coolers can generate a musty smell so I make sure to empty it of water when I'm done using the cool air function. I only fill it with water when its extremely hot because the fan works fine for me most days. It's a very nice unit and it's exactly what I was looking for. Better than a fan and more efficient that an air conditioner.
Great little cooler March 31, 2009 C. Larson (Alameda, CA) 10 out of 12 found this review helpful
For everyday use it makes a great fan and air ionizer/cleaner. It has an oscillating fan which you can direct up or down as it swings left and right to blow air all around the room. And it really helps on hot days if you add ice or cold water and turn on the Cool-Air function. It also comes with a full-function remote which comes in real handy. Best of all it doesn't use much energy to operate. You can't really go wrong with this cooler for the price.
Working well so far... August 5, 2010 Kendrick Keeton I received the cooler yesterday after work. Seems like a solidly build unit. As designed I found the netting for the evaporation process too limiting. So what you want to do is buy some swamp cooler foam, cut it to fit behind the net... then drill three quarter inch holes in the water pan. Works like a charm.
Works as efficiently as any evaporative cooler would August 15, 2010 McKay (USA) This unit is design for about a 12 X 12 foot room and can help a hot day be livable. Being able to add ice into the water trough and an ice pack into the top can lower the temperature 5-10 degrees (F). The only minor draw back is it increases humidity, my doctor would not call it a negative, which on an extremely hot day can make you feel sticky. This unit is really good in desert/low humidity geographic areas.
Not really worth the effort August 14, 2007 Mark Finzel (Colorado Springs, CO) 32 out of 36 found this review helpful
To be fair, the product does not claim to be an air conditioner. However, it does claim to cool 12 degrees cooler, which I didn't find at all. I live in a dry Colorado climate, and still it is barely cooler than a fan. You have to fill it with tons of ice to even get that, and it requires refilling with water and ice often. If you don't clean it at least once a week, it starts smelling really bad.
All this effort of refilling and cleaning is not worth the 3 to 5 degrees cooler you get. For that, I'd rather just plug in a fan and not have to worry about it every day. Save your money and buy a portable air conditioner. It's worth the extra investment, trust me.
